Victor Y. See Yuen is of Chinese, African, Spanish and French ancestry and hails from the Carribean island of Trinidad and Tobago. He arrived in New York City in 1972 and studied under the guidance of legendary percussionist Joe (Papo) Daddiego, founder of JOPA Instruments becoming an accomplished international percussionist. Victor is also a songwriter, record producer, arranger, and poet. He has recorded over 300 CDs and performed with exceptionally gifted artists such as Sonny Rollins, Ron Carter, Kathlen Battle, Wynton Marsalis, Sarah Vaughn, T.S. Monk. Mos Def, Judith Jamison, Arrow, Sister Sledge, Jonathan Butler, Geoffrey, Brook Benton, B.T. Express, Lester Bowie and Brass Fantasy, Melba Moore, Crown Heights Affair, Diane Reeves, Najee, The Mighty Sparrow, Taj Mahal, Candido, Joe Williams, Phyllis Hyman, Machel Montano, Dave Valentino, McCoy Tyner, Nat Adderley, The Stylistics, Chico O'Farrell Orchestra, Byron Lee and the Dragonaires, Andre Previn, Hubert Laws, Eric Gale, Mongo Santamaria, Lord Nelson, Chic and Luthor Van Dross among others, on some of the greatest stages in the world.
He has written and produced music and lyrics for vocalists Renee Manning and Sheila Galilei. Victor co-produced several CDs including Landmarks with Clifton Anderson, Heritage: Percussion for Dance, Exercise and Aerobics, Universal Healing, and When I Start To Play an organic percussion ensemble with Hasan Bakr, Ron McBee and Kevin Nathaniel, and co-founded Heritage Organic Percussion.
Victor created "Evolution Suites" with William Catanzaro, The Dance Technique of Lester Horton Vol I and II with William Catanzaro and Ana Marie Forsythe, and co-wrote a musical score with Mark Flanders for the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre premier of "Days Past, Not Forgotten" at City Center.
Victor is the musical director of the ICHUSA Festival.
Immersed from childhood in the swinging Trinidadian rhythms, Victor has forged a sound of his own which sparkles. Victor plays a variety of percussion and melodic instruments including congas, bongos, mbira and the Vietnamese dant'rung.
Mr. See Yuen remains a much soughts after and highly regarded musician because his enduring style, and the unique set of skills he brings to every endeavor.
